Sex And The City 2 Verdict.

After a 2 year hiatus, the ever-fashionable Carrie Bradshaw and Co. have yet again returned to grace the big screen for the second installment of the much hyped Sex And The City 2 movie.

On a bitterly cold thursday evening ( it's supposed to be summer for crying out loud! thank you british weather) in London's Leicester Square, the fashionable four-some stepped onto the red carpet amidst a frenzy of photographers, press, publicists, the obligatory Z-listers from reality T.V. shows, pop stars and tabloid favourites that will show up to any event as long as there's a camera and a chance to end up in the news. And of course not forgetting sreaming fans most of whom were teenage girls who I thought, "hang on,these aren't the real fans." Fact is the real fans were the 18-35 age bracket when the T.V. series first aired in 1998, ran until 2004. Fast forward 12 years later, these guys are now 30-42 years old with alot of responsibilities and Leicester square on a cold thursday evening is the last place you'll find them.

It opened nationwide on our shores yesterday and I was among the first people at the cinema where I looked out of place because I really should have been at the office but I couldn't wait till day's-end to do the options-exploration on all the companies whose products appeared in the movie so I could check the share price movement after opening weekend in U.S. and Europe. Anyway, while in the line, I noticed there's 3 types of males who will watch this movie; 1. those who are of 'the other persuasion,' 2. the critic/analyst, 3. those that have been dragged screaming and kicking to the thing by their girlfriends.

Forgive me for trailing off. but that's just me. I tend to notice all the details that are usually ignored. Back to the verdict.

I’ve always been a huge admirer of the franchise, but not for the reasons you’d think. I’m a fan because I think it empowers single men, not single women. The message is: "No need to worry about falling in love, ladies. Having sex with a bloke you’ve just met in a bar is perfectly okay."
I remember when the television series came out in the late-90s and watching it drinking in the behaviour of Carrie Bradshaw and her friends. As a single man, I thought all my Christmases had come at once.

I thanked God for Michael Patrick King, Darren Star and HBO because they made a TV show that persuades attractive women in their 20s and 30s that it’s fashionable to have sex with men like us without demanding any sort of emotional commitment in return. Not only that, but we’ll do our best to convince them that they actually have to go out of their way to induce us to have this no-strings attached sex by spending several hours a day on incredibly painful personal grooming procedures and then squeezing themselves into these fantastically uncomfortable shoes. The beauty part is we’ll persuade them that doing all this stuff for our benefit – spending their lives beautifying themselves and then submitting to our every sexual demand without asking for anything in return – is a ‘post-feminist’ choice.

An entire generation of women fell for it hook, line and sinker. Far from being seen as sluts, women like Samantha Jones were regarded as ‘role models’. Suddenly, it become cool for women to allow themselves to be picked up in bars by selfish, predatory males who are only interested in one-night stands. Who cares if the men never bothered calling them afterwards? It was ‘liberated’ behaviour.

Sex and the City is like a version of The Female Eunuch rewritten by Hugh Hefner.

Then 4 years after the last episode aired in 2004, Michael Patrick King decided to reward us with the movie version which was a huge commercial success and thus this second installment.

In this movie, it goes on to say, "if you like it then you should put a ring on it." sang non other than by 'The Liza Minelli' at a gay wedding in Connecticut ( that scene is so funny, you'll be in stitches). One recurring theme of Sex and the City I particularly enjoy is the idea that modern single women should have two completely different sets of standards when it comes to who they should sleep with and who they should marry. Apparently, it’s okay to share your bed with any Tom, Dick or Harry, but the only men you should marry are chief executives who look like male models and earn over ten million dollars a year. Great! That means they’re never, ever going to get married and will continue to sleep with less-than-perfect men without ever expecting us to put rings on their fingers.

This sequel has no plot whatsoever. It's a mess. It should have been called "four older women get lost in the middle east and a whole lot of product placement.
Where do I begin. Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Dior, Louboutin, Bergdom Goodman, Rolex, Mercedes, Land Rover, The Arab Emirate of Abu Dhabi (even though the actual shooting was in Morrocco coz the authorities in Abu Dhabi refused to grant a filming licence). The list goes on and on till one gets tired of counting.

It includes a gay wedding, a film premier of Samantha's ex where she finds herself in a bit of a 'wadrope situation' on the red carpet (funny scene), then the middle east trip, and in between we get 'fillers' like Charlote's the bra-less nanny that turns out to be lesbian-what a ridiculous plot!, a gay middle-eastern butler which is as close to blasphemy as can be, and then the coup de grace is when Carrie stops a cab to take them to the airport by flashing her thighs while wearing the traditional arab dressing (no wonder the licence was denied but I gotta say the build up to that scene was so funny that I was in stitches). This is so offensive to their culture to suggest such a thing.

Anyway, I could rant on about this movie from sunrise to sunset but you have to see it for yourself to see how ridiculous it is.

Michael Patrick King and the excecutives at HBO will be laughing all the way to the bank forever coz there will be no end to the supply of the gullible and simple minded.

Verdict: 4/10.

Life's A Game Of Chess.

Life's a game of chess...

What Is Rich?

Rich is education...expertise...technology.
Rich is knowing.
We have money, yes.
But we are not rich.

We are like the children who inherit money from the father they never knew.
They have not been brought up to spend it.
They have it in their hands; they don't know how to use it.
If you don't know how to spend money, you are not rich.
We are not rich.

Without this knowledge, this understanding, we are nothing.
We import everything.
The bricks to make houses, we import.
The men who build them, we import.
You go to the market, what is there that is made by us? Nothing.
It is Chinese, German, Italian ...it is not ours.
Is a country rich that cannot make a brick, or a motorcar, or a book?
It is not rich, I think.

Back When...

Back when I was still incredibly impressionable, I had an unhealthy obssession with LV product that I went and purchased this back pack from a market vendor in London just to show off to my friends that I was 'the man'. Cost £30.

In hind sight, I shouldn't have done it coz the counterfeit market hepls fuel some hedious crimes like terrorism and the like. I couldn't be bothered with that back then; all I wanted was to look fly; whether real or fake, until I started to read and research into the plight of child labourers in south-east asia and the under world that run these organised crime syndicates and their connection to human injustice.

This brought up one question- what are these big corporates doing to combat this illegal trade?
Well, I was pleased to find that LV spends atleast $14 million anually chasing and prosecuting these guys and anyone dealing them. Case in point was on 30th June 2008 the landmark case LV won $63 million from E-bay for selling counterfeit products.

Atleast some one is doing something to combat this global scourge.

On a lighter note, I saw this backpack on the mens'wear day during LFW...

Nowadays, I'm content with my red and black tote from Reiss that I got at a reasonable sum of £117. Never been happier with it since it carries every thing including the kitchen sink and still goes strong. They don't make em any more coz the other day I went online to get one in just black and they had been discontinued.

The Bar Tender

Yesterday I said we were gonna delve into some financials of hip-hop fashion labels... (yawn). I've changed my mind and decided to swiftly move onto this young lady who I run into the last time I was in London's Soho. I hadn't noticed her at first coz I was running to some other appointment but then I just caught sight of her outfit as we bypassed each other coz you know I'm always 'on the hunt' especially in this part of town.

I immediately turned around and run back two steps at a time till I got to her and gave her 'the-everybody-needs-visual-stimulation-speech' till she obliged me and also gave a cute smile to go with it...

We didn't take long since we were both running late but from the little conversation we had, I got to know that she worked in a bar nearby and her shift had already begun 20 minutes ago... ooops!

Hustle-nomics

Hip-Hop And The Fashion Entreprenuer.

'Fresh to death head to toe till the day I rest, S-dots on my feet make my chypher complete...times that by my influence on pop culture, i supposed to be number one on everybody list...'
Jay -Z (What more can I Say- The Black Album).

This is an excerpt from one of Jay-Z's songs talking about his love for fashion and how it has made him a very wealthy and powerful man. He is one of many hip-hop artists who have managed to successfully leverage their multi-platinum record sales into viable enterprises including establishing successful fashion businesses.

The God Father of hip-hop fashion is none other than Russell Simmons of PhatFarm. Although he was not a hip-hop artist, he was the founder of Def Jam Records that bruoght us the many hip-hop artists we have come to enjoy such as DMX, Ja-Rule, Ludacris, Jay-Z, Nas to mention but a few.

Most of these artists took the blueprint from Russell and established their own fashion labels (such as Jay-Z -Rocawear, P Diddy-SeanJohn, 50Cent-G Unit clothing, Nelly-Vokal) and many many others.

In the early 1980's the 'in' hip-hop fashion for New York City Black youth included Gazelles (glasses), sheepskins and leather bombers (Coats), Clarks (shoes), name plates and name belts.

Today hip-hop's commercialized element has all the youth all over the world on the same page, regardless of geographic region. In this hip-hop freindly international environment, hip-hop designers such as Enyce, Mecca, FUBU, PhatFarm, Rocawear etc are thriving multi-million dollar businesses largely because of the ever-increasing popularity of the artists endorsing them many of whom own the labels themselves.

By tapping into the popularity for hip-hop culture, some artists have also extended their entreprenurial skills to do collabos with some 'blue-chip' fashion houses for example: Pharell Williams of The Neptunes did a sunglasses line for Louis Vuitton, Kanye West did a sneaker collection for Louis Vuitton and a bag for the exclusive leather manufacturer Goyard, 50 Cent has a contract with Reebok for sneakers so is Jay-Z and the Simmons family have their own line called Run-Athletic with Reeebok as well.

In conclusion, the new hip-hop fashion entreprenuer is as savvy as they come and is now punching in the same weight as the 'big boys'.

P.S. Tommorrow , we shall delve into some revenues for these companies. Hope I'm Not boring you with all this.
Have a smahing weekend, and remember kids, don't do anything I wouldn't do or otherwise your uncle David won't be happy.
Later...

Rap-onomics

Hip-Hop as an Influence On Today's Fashion.

What started as the Hip-Hop movement in the South Bronx back in the seventies has today morphed into what is commonly refered to as Urban Culture.

Largely because of rap music, one can tune into the voices and find the faces of today's youth at any point in the day. Having proven themselves as marketable entertainers with successful music careers, rappers and rnb singers alike regulary endorse corporate products (such as Missy Elliot-The Gap, Pharell Williams-LV and Moncler, Kanye West-LV, 50 Cent-Reeebok, Jay-Z-Reebok, Tyrese-Calvin Klein).

By the late 1980's, advitisers like the Gap, Nike, PhatFarm, SeanJohn, Tommy Hilfiger and other major fashion houses had already incorporated hip-hop's nuances into their advertising campaigns.

In the proces, images and ideas that define youth culture for this generation- such as designer clothes, like Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Hermes, ever changing styles of dress and local colloquialisms- are beamed out to a captive international audience.

For something that began in the South Bronx in the seventies, to steadily grow into a major international cultural movement today, is a great achievement. There is no denying that hip-hop as an agent of social change has influenced the way today's fashion houses communicate their products to a younger audience.

Weekends In London.

London is an interesting place to live and work.
Here's what my most of my weekends consist of over the summer months.
It's like a tourist guide of some sort (My London) I call it.

Friday:
lunch with big bro M in Victoria (we usually go to the Pizza Hut and talk about things).

Mayfair, have a look at the new exhibitions usually at The Gagosian, Hamilton's gallery, White Cube gallery and anything on Bruton street, Bond street and The Francis Kyle gallery on Maddox street.

Soho and environs that is Regent street, Oxford Circus , Canarby Street etc have look at what the retailers are offering and any 'pop-up' shops or activities. The energy in this part of town is tremendous and exciting coz of the coming weekend. Don't forget to pick up a free Evening Standard newspaper and the Es Magazine that comes with it (great for fashion).

Knightsbridge. Laduree at Harrods to meet with friends from Vertu for our weekly 'chat' (more like gossip if you ask me) but I love it. In the cold months, we go to the fourth floor in Harrods at Andronicas for the best coffee in town this side of the river.

home to catch the closing bell at the NYSE and the close of the American markets, the open of the Asian markets at 11pm. Bed by 1am.

Saturday:
Southbank, Tate Mordern, to see whatever they got going on in terms of new exhibitions or activities.

Portobello. Walk from Notting Hill Gate tube all the way down Portobello Road towards Ladbroke Grove tube via Westbourne Grove ( it's got an eclectic mix of designer and independent boutique shops). If you have the time don't forget to have a look at The Electric Cinema on your way. They usually have great art house and independent films on show.

Camden; to meet with friends for a drink usually at The Hawley Arms, The Elephants Head, The Bar Fly etc etc. Take the no.31 bus from Westbourne grove tube towards Chalk farm The Round House, ( they have a great summer programme) get out and walk towards the stables market and onwards till mornington crescent KOKO then if you are not beat, head Midtown; for a night out with friends.

Sunday;
From midday, it's Shoreditch time! head to The White Chapel Art Gallery, exit at Algate East tube walk round the corner onto Brick Lane all the way up taking in the Sunday market in Spitalfields market and surronding areas. Cafe 1001 is a must see for people-watching while 'sipping on something' till you get to liverpool street tube. This is the most fashion forward part of town great for 'street- style hunting' especially on Sundays that's if you can get around the big crowd which adds to the exciting atmosphere.

Well that's it, for my london audience, give it a try, for my international audience, e-mail me next time you're in town and we'll have a merry go-around.

Shy Gal... Part 3.

Okay okay, I know that i'm in danger of becoming a one trick pony by the continual postage of only fashion week pictures which ended like a million years ago (move on David) but I cannot ignore some of these ladies who were a bit camera shy considering the occassion.

Now this one decided to turn the tables on me after I had pestered her for a picture. She was my partner in crime for the day and her name is Hollie from New Zealand.

Cute smile.

Window-Mania.

I believe that a window is the essence of the store. Therefore, if a window doesn't 'speak' to me, most likely I don't bother going in.
Here are some of last season's windows that caught my attention in London town.
Some are art installations with great messages like this at Selfridges...

The 'Chair of Horns' at Ermanno Scervino...

And this campaign by French Connection...

This particular one was at the Bond Street store next to Selfridges.

Shy Girl...Part 2

To me, this is what it's all about. A nice (cold) sunny day and beautiful (but shy) stylish ladies like these fit for a cover.

Wouldn't you agree?

Saturday, 8 May 2010

Shy Gal...Part 1.

Although it ended a million years ago, allow me to scrape the barrel of what's left of my fashion week diary to present these characters who seemed to be not at all preoccupied with the proceedings of the day.

Fashion week attracts all sorts of interesting characters like this...

And this...

There is no denying the fact that these guys are going to be all over the blogo-sphere and any other media you can imagine. I sometimes join in the circus that usually follows these guys and take shots coz let's face it, you can't ignore them.

On the other hand I mostly spend my time shooting shoes and scouring the peripheris for those quiet yet fashion conscious characters who wouldn't normally be shot by the camera-totting fray. Yet these in my opinion are the real beauties worthy of a cover...

Something tells me this gal is anything what the title suggests. Infact, she is anything but. She is the talented ms. shini of park and cube.
